The villages of the Cinque Terre
There are five villages within the Cinque Terre Park.
RIOMAGGIORE
Riomaggiore is the largest of the five Cinque Terre villages. Its pastel-colored buildings wind up the hills until they reach a tiny port. Sunset is the most romantic moment of the day when the village lights up with warm and magical colors. Do not miss the walks in the mountains between Riomaggiore and La Spezia.
MANAROLA
Manarola is surrounded by vines and is famous for its sweet Sciacchetrà wine. It is also known for its precious medieval relics which make it the oldest city in the Cinque Terre. Thanks to its proximity to Riomaggiore (852 m away), Manarola will not be difficult to reach.
CORNIGLIA
Corniglia is the most “quiet” village of the Cinque Terre and is located on top of a 100-metre rocky promontory. It is the only settlement in the Cinque Terre without direct access to the sea, steps leading to a nearby rocky bay. Narrow alleys and houses painted in bright colors characterize the ancient nucleus. A timeless landscape that was mentioned in Boccaccio’s Decameron.
VERNAZZA
The small port of Vernazza is the only one to have a landing place on the Cinque Terre coast surrounded by small typical restaurants. The main road of the small village (Via Roma) connects the sea to Piazza Marconi with the railway station.
MONTEROSSO
Monterosso is the most easily accessible village by car and the only one in the Cinque Terre to have a long beach. This charming village is known for its lemon trees and anchovy speciality. Monterosso is divided into two parts, the ancient and the modern, which are connected by an underground tunnel dug under the promontory of San Cristoforo.
